Wrong signage

When the legendary man of power, Barack Obama came over to pay a visit to us fellow citizens of Malaysia, we made a fool out of ourselves.
Looking at the open letter on the electronical billboard at federal highway, we can immediately notice the grammatical error. This has made us a international laughing stock more than we already are.
Now some of us can argue that the sentence is not exactly wrong, but what I think is that there are much easier sentence or rather way more sensible.
The coverage.my suggested some correct sentences:
“The sentence is wrong, it can never be ‘welcome to’ unless it’s an invitation, a greeting is always welcome. ‘Malaysia welcomes US President Barack Obama’ would be more appropriate, “she said, adding that ‘the’ in the greeting was also wrongly used. (nst)
